Les Hirondelles takes its name from the swallows that give a nightly display of aerial gymnastics as they flit about catching airborne insects as the sun sinks below the mountain peaks. Our cosy and perfectly formed little house sits on the side of a mountain in the small commune of Clignon Bas, with panoramic views towards Colmars les Alpes from its long balcony running along the length of the property. The sun shines on the balcony all day and nothing beats sitting there on a summer’s evening, relaxing with glass in hand.
In summer, as the sun is very strong, there are two awnings which can be wound out to give shade. In winter, admire the view while snuggling down in front of a real log fire. It’s a perfect venue for a holiday whether you like relaxing or exploring in the warmth of summer, being invigorated by the freshness of spring, entranced by the glorious autumn colour, or in winter, spending days on the slopes and playing in the snow. The choices are endless whether you’re a family with children, a group of friends or a couple. We also welcome your dog!
WE ARE A STRICTLY NON-SMOKING RESIDENCE
JUST FIVE MINUTES FROM THE MEDIEVAL TOWN OF COMARS LES ALPES
THE TOWN HAS BEEN OFFICALLY RECOGNISED AS ONE OF
LES PLUS BEAUX VILLAGES EN FRANCE
In the late 14th century, the valleys around Allos and Barcelonnette to the north were given to the Duchy of Savoy, and Colmars became an important border town, which meant it also required fortification. Despite some additions by the military architect Vauban in the 18th century, the town, with its towers, turrets and ramparts, still looks largely as it would have during medieval times.
There’s a small, popular museum detailing the village’s history, but the main attraction is just wandering round its shady cobbled streets with its small squares and many carved fountains. Some sections of the ramparts are open in summer. The square Fort de France to the south, now incomplete, and larger Fort de Savoie to the north, were Vauban’s additions.
In summertime, the twice weekly market is a major attraction and other events are held within its old walls throughout the year.
Summertime is the season of wild flowers, butterflies and cloudless blue skies. With on average 300 days sunshine a year, it’s also the season when you’ll want to spend a lot of time outside basking in its warmth, only interrupted by the occasional summer storm passing by. For the energetic the area offers a whole host of activities to keep everyone happy. For those who prefer to spend their days relaxing or taking it at a slightly slower pace, then you can visit the Provencal market in the village, or wander through the amazing scenery discovering waterfalls, lakes and rivers. For true relaxation as the evening sun dips below the mountain peaks, sit with a glass of wine on the balcony and take in the stunning view.

The ski area of La Foux d’Allos is a mere 20 minutes from the house, lying at the head of the upper Verdon valley. This lively winter resort is linked via a lift system to Pra Loup, located in the Ubaye valley, together creating the biggest ski area in the southern Alpes. With 180 km of pistes to explore, a good snowfall record and plenty of sunshine, there is enough to keep both snow borders and skiers happy, whatever level they may be. La Foux has an excellent ski school offering a range of lessons from beginners to improvers and beyond. If you prefer a smaller resort, then the good news is that Seignus, lower down the valley, just beyond the village of Allos, is a much smaller resort, but no less challenging. Whatever you choose, with new lifts installed and constant improvements being made, the resorts are an excellent destination for your winter sports holiday.
